Boarding and Field Measurements with Architect at Big Mama's House

This week, we went back over to Big Mama’s house to finally begin some sort of work on her home. Because, we purchased the house from Shelby County government there were legal restrictions that we had to adhere to before beginning any kind of work. I shared my frustration briefly on social media about the entire process. It has been very long drawn out and quite irritating. I know COVID through a wrench in the process so I have tried to be understanding and patient.

Finally, after reaching out to the Mayor and my realtor, we received our papers in the mail and could begin work. We were prohibited from even placing a nail in the house initially. So, when we got the go we WENT, lol. The first order of business was boarding the house up to keep people from going in and out of it. We did all of that work last month cleaning up the house from tons of trash we didn’t want anyone coming in and trashing the house again.

Now that trash is gone and the verification of ownership documents are in my hand, we called Sophorn back over to do field measurements. The field measurements were so imperative for a number of reasons. One the house is totally not up to code AT ALL. Due to the house being built in the 1930s, a lot of the specifications then are totally null and void now. There also isn’t any plumbing or electricity in the house. So we are basically starting from an empty slate. We needed her to come by to take measurements to draw up a new floorplan with our vision to lay out plumbing and electricity according to how we will renovate the home.
