Lunch at Hu.Diner with Friends
A couple of weeks ago, my friends Kim and Carmeon decided to visit Hu.Diner for lunch literally the day after we attend the media dinner for its opening. During the dinner, we were served shared plates of dinner options like barbecue octopus and grit and chicken livers with baked apples . The elevated comfort food was so delectable and unlike any I’ve ever tasted that I promised Chef TJ I would be back before he knew it. We all met after meetings to really savor the taste, decor, and atmosphere of this all new Southern dining experience at Hu.Diner.
Dining at Hu.Diner is an experience. Although it has a familiar feeling of Southern nostalgia, it is perfectly blended with an elevated taste in its ambiance, service, and decor. We all gazed around looking for subtle details that captivated us in a new way. The music is perfect. The artist collection featuring Memphis’ Ernest Withers, the rhythm of the interior design, and even the attire of the staff makes you feel like you are in a different Memphis .
The restaurant and patio serve lunch and dinner daily. The menu is Southern without any doubt. Yet, Chef TJ’s talent and humble beginnings as his mother’s catering assistant and a graduate of Chicago’s Le Cordon Bleu in Chicago brings a different aesthetic and feel to Southern food in Memphis. Who would think to pair barbecue octopus with black pepper grits romesco and pancetta vinaigrette or locally sourced pan roasted catfish with anson mills carolina rice, woodson farms purple hull peas, chow chow picatta, and greens other than a brilliant chef like TJ Harville.
During the media night, I really enjoyed the catfish with purple hull peas entree. So much so that, I wanted the catfish sandwich for lunch. I chose the dill potato salad as a side. What a great choice! The catfish was cooked to perfection. I love Chef TJ’s chow chow so with every bite I reflected on good Southern eating. The potato slices were so big and delectable.
