Artist Date: Ashley Longshore Studio Gallery
I had a plethora of things in mind to do as I ventured down south to New Orleans to go on an extended artist date. I wanted to enchant myself, woo myself, be inspired again, discover something hidden within myself but mostly play in order to seduce the creativity inside of me. I curated my own little tour of restaurants, bars, and artists studio's that were hidden gems of New Orleans.
A quick google search and following GPS, I walked up to this door with a sign that read, "If you are racist, sexist, homophobic, or an asshole don't come in, I had arrived at "THE" Ashley Longshore's Studio Gallery. Let me take a few steps back, an artist date isn't necessarily supposed to be shared. I took my husband along for the ride and sharing with you all. Who and why would anyone want to keep Ashley Longshore a secret?!
Ashley Longshore's work is bold, unapologetically, fiercely feminine in a "she gives no phucks" way. She has a potty mouth and has perfectly mastered raunchiness. Her work is beyond cool with dazzled out Frida Kahlo and Audrey Hepburn paintings, Kate Moss as a nun, Anna Wintour on a throw pillow, and a super dope pic of Jesus wanting to Kiki. She ignites the fire and desire in you to go get what you want Big Birkin or that career with her personal mantras and proverbs. I loved so many but here I share a few, " Stop complaining, period. Just woman the fuck up, put on your big girl panties, and deal with it or Major Poontang does not fly commercial.
She is more than the bomb, she's major goals. She has worked hard to build a sustainable and viable career in art. In her book, she talks about branding, creating work that pays the bills and buys the birkins, AND if you want something you have to work so hard to get it, work until you get it. She talks a lot about women in creative fields in American really can make so much happen for themselves. “Here, if you’re willing to work hard enough, you can look at yourself every morning, pinch your nipples and smile, and say goddamn it, ‘I can go out and do anything I need to do.’ The days of starving artist is over and that's what inspired me the most in her studio gallery next to her larger than life personality and style.
I mean, she had a freaking art installation at Bergdorf Goodman, geesh, talk about pop artist bad woman she is. It is to be noted that she lured a huge crowd, Bergdorf mentioned that sales were through the roof and many many celebrities such as Blake Lively, June Ambrose, and Christian Siriano came out to see Ashley Longshore. Man!
I am so glad I took out the time to play and be inspired while in New Orleans. I discovered my new woman crush to stalk on Instagram. Mostly, I am energized to continue creating work that I love, that's liberating and inspiring just as Ashley Longshore's work is to so many.
