I think Daniel and I, well I, have found what I'm looking for in Mexican restaurants.
Pretty sure you have seen by now Daniel, my fiance is Mexican. And, pretty sure you can assume he loves Mexican food. As with many Mexicans, they know Mexican food. Authenticity, simplicity and comfort, and traditional recipes are what he seeks when eating at Mexican restaurants. I, well I am a Gringa---Americana, who can't pick up on "real" salsa or canned, just yet. Daniel, on the other hand, will dip his finger in salsa immediately and say "Oh no that's fake, it's canned."
I, I look for beauty and ambiance. I have been to many mom and pop restaurants with amazing food yet the ambiance didn't elevate my experience. I'm always looking for elevacion y ambiente. When you eat cultural food that is comforting and cooked from the soul in restaurants often times, the focus is on the food. Not with Maciel's Taco Shop on Highland.
As I walked in I was so intrigued and stimulated. Greeted by a very vivid and colorful mural on the exposed brick wall, textured straw light fixtures, copper trim and a gorgeous brown, grey and wooden color palette, I was almost sold. The energy felt as if I could predict how my future home blended with brown and black culture (American + Mexican) would look like.
I ordered una taco de asada y una taco de tinga. It's a beef taco and tinga taco. Oh my god, it was my first time eating tinga taco. It's shredded chicken cooked in the most delicious spiced sauce on the planet and then stuffed in a taco…. Ummm yes please. The Tinga sauce is pretty much out of this world. ... But when it's folded up in a taco and topped with some avocado to balance the sauce, it's absolute perfection. Daniel had a milenza torta, Milenza is thin cutlet, breaded and fried, similar to a schnitzel or chicken-fried steak.
EVERYTHING WAS STAMPED AND APPROVED BY THE MEXICAN FOOD CONNISEUR AND MYSELF.
Maciel's Taco Shop has an indoor and outdoor patio and also offers a bigger menu than the downtown location, brunch and a full service bar.
