My Acupuncture Treatment with Sundara Wellness
A short two weeks ago, I attended the opening night for Sundara Wellness Center . I loved that the center was very modern not granola-ish center, you all know what I mean. It was very refreshing to see that finally, there is a place in Memphis with a very varied yet focused scope of services provided. Sundara has a diverse and experienced team of health experts that proudly offer holistic wellness services including acupuncture, pelvic health physical therapy, massage therapy, nutritional planning and dietetics, pilates, yoga, and women's primary care.
Too often, busy schedules and constant demands convince our clients that their time is only well spent when serving others. But caring for others starts with a healthy self. This is why we encourage supportive self-care and preventative wellness: so that you can continue living and loving fully. -Sundara Wellness
This ideology captivated me upon my first visit to Sundara. For so long, I have searched for a wellness center in Memphis that offers a preventative approach to care and health and not reactive. I have always been passionate about my desire to feel like a whole woman by slowing down to really heal from the inside out without covering up ailments or other health issues with medication. I convinced myself very early on that lifestyle changes and alternative holistic services served a greater good to my inner self.
I engaged with the staff during the opening night and was really impressed by the number of them who were very intentional in serving women like me. I candidly discussed my need to begin a journey of healing myself from anxiety and my need to take care of my reproductive health. Being honest with myself about lifestyle factors, diet, and honestly not taking the time for self care was the first step in this beautiful healing process.
So, I am here and commencing the process of living well with Sundara. There is a really special and unique way of doing things in regards to total health at Sundara, that I adore. Sundara’s team of wellness professionals work and serve together to provide integrated whole body wellness. What I mean by that is, you or I can go in for massage services- - -because your meridians (energy highways) are now open, walk around the hall to receive acupuncture services and later see a provider who specializes in pelvic health physical therapy. Amazing, I know. This is women’s primary care!
I want to be very intentional in sharing how I enjoyed the services and more so the one on one consultations with each practitioner. Why? Well, I am sure it will further persuade you, I hope, to try other means of caring for your total health. Our bodies are sacred temples and well thought out machines that are more connected than we can ever know. Acupuncture has really opened my eyes to the relationships each organ has with another and how disruption in energy or ailments can manifest in my day to day lifestyle or functions.
I’m sure some of you will ask or are very curious as to how acupuncture works? Candace explained in a way that I could really understand. It works by stimulating certain points on the body with a needle penetrating the skin to alleviate pain or to help treat various health conditions. Traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is linked to the belief that disease is caused by disruptions to the flow of energy, or qi, in the body. Acupuncture stimulates points on or under the skin called acupuncture points or acupressure points, releasing this qi.
I visited with Candace Billings who is trained to treat a wide variety of conditions. She specializes in women’s health, fertility, prenatal and postpartum care, digestive and endocrine disorders, fatigue, and emotional health. I totally could use her healing hands.
Here’s a very quick story but a very critical story to tell. Candace sat down to conduct a very thorough consultation with me to best decide her treatment and the things we need to work on with my body’s constitution. In the completion of my health intake form, I mistakenly left out that I have eczema. I really did not think it would matter. Candace carefully assessed the palpation of my pulse, abdomen, and acupuncture channels within five minutes I was shocked. She said, “Your blood flow is very deep and looking at your tongue and abdomen, I’m so surprised you don’t have any skin conditions. I’m going to recommend you get an allergy test”. I said, “Oh my God, I totally forgot to tell you that I have eczema”. “Wow, you diagnosed that through feeling my pulse.”
Now I’m very curious as to how my headaches, anxiety and even my recent miscarriage could be all related somehow. By spending time with Candace, I learned in Chinese medicine, the uterus and the liver are closely related. I’m pretty sure after we address the stagnation in my liver I’ll be well on my way to feeling better, living better and just being better overall.
My acupuncture treatment with Candace over time will include working on certain areas of my body and its constitution to release qi in particular areas as well as getting blood flowing to all of the areas of my body. She was amazing in helping me understand how the way my blood flows is affecting my liver, which has a direct affect on my digestive system and therefore presents itself as eczema. Oh my! Oh my!
She is also working on restoring my reproductive health and my fertility through acupuncture, which is unbelievable. The placement of the needles in my abdomen area was mainly due to Candace’s diagnostic evaluation of my response to the needles. Oh let me go back in retrospect a tad, the needles were very surprisingly PAINLESS. They feel like little horsehair tickling your skin.
However, when she placed a couple of needles in two places in my abdomen I felt a dull sensation. It was great news for Candace. It allowed her to see that there is an issue that needed to be addressed in that area. I was very receptive of hearing the news since we are trying to conceive again. It is so important to me to get well prior to getting pregnant again. Caring for my womb now and being sure that the blood flows to the uterus to help nurture a new baby is so important.
I have a few more acupuncture treatments before I really start seeing dramatic results. However, I am more optimistic and convinced that acupuncture works. After my first session, I didn’t have a headache for an entire week. I normally take an Advil every other day. I didn’t take one at all, for an entire week. There was no extreme itching or flare ups with my eczema. My skin feels more lubricated. In regards to my fertility, I noticed that my cervical mucus lingered longer. Good sign. Egg white cervical mucus is a beautiful sign of fertility. It means that the mucus is making the environment for the sperm highly conducive for making us a little Garcia baby.
Candace provided the best acupuncture service. I was initially nervous, well not nervous, I just didn’t know what to expect. However, she was so comforting and very knowledgeable. I was reassured that if I take a holistic approach to healing that maybe slower, it would definitely be sure. She even recommend supplements and herbs that are available at Sundara to continue my therapy.
