Why Every Woman Should Learn A Second Language & How
I was once asked during a branding workshop for my company to describe the AndreaFenise woman. I began to visualize what the AndreaFenise woman looked like, where she lived, and what her lifestyle was like. I was more happily consumed with how cultured she is. I envisioned her frolicking to museums and speaking Spanish with her friends over a five course dinner.
So here's the easy transition into why I think every woman should learn a second language and how.
+ HELP YOU IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE
Speaking a second language allows you to become more marketable, socially and professionally. Being bilingual immediately allows you to negotiate more pay in many corporate jobs. You just may get the job over someone who may have a little more qualifications simply because you are able to speak with a broader demographic versus other candidates.
+ THE WORLD OPENS UP FOR YOU
Our world is getting smaller or I shall say more globalized. Spanish is the most widely spoken language all over the world. These days, there’s a good chance your company will be involved with international partners or clients Your second language could be a big asset. Having another popular language like Spanish, French or Chinese under your belt will keep you in a great position to be the key employee for projects like these. This could ultimately advance your career and put you in a position to be a leader.
+ IT'S ROMANTIC
Spanish is a romance language. It sounds so sexy huh?! It's the perfect language to speak with your lover, perfecto for role playing. Nothing says romance like taking the time to learn how to communicate with a potential partner or significant other in their native tongue.
+ COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR CHILDREN
By 2050, the U.S. will be the largest Spanish speaking country, according to the Association of Spanish Language Academies. That means that if if you have children in the next decade or so, they will likely speak the language or at least have friends who speak Spanish. Now, wouldn't you like to understand what your children and their friends are saying to one another when they're not speaking English? I know I would, can't let Amira pull tricks on me lol.
I'd like to share with you all how I have taught myself Spanish over the last year or so...
+ AUDIO BOOKS
Audio books are the most effective way to learn a second language like Spanish. I love the Living Language series so much. Each set comes with three books with a variation of skill levels and CDs for each book. They also have online resources to refer to for additional conversations.
+ OLD TEXTBOOKS
One of my goals is to not only speak Spanish but read and write as well. School textbooks are a great resource to learn how to both read and write Spanish. I love borrowing teacher's editions because they have great exercises to follow along to make you think outside of the box.
+ BILINGUAL CHILDREN'S BOOKS
I love checking out bilingual kids books to share the experience with Amira. Each book has the phrase in English and Spanish so it's perfect for learning and bonding. If your child is learning Spanish in school it's a great reinforcement. Are you a proactive parent? Spanish isn't taught in school for you all? Here you go.. learn it on your own.
+ DUOLINGO APP
We love this app. It's so cool and we get to learn on the go. The Duolingo app tracks your learning progress and grades your responses. It teaches you words and phrases to build upon.
Hope this helps you design a cultured life.
