VIDEO : Cena y Conversacion
Want to know the biggest lesson I’ve learned on my journey of becoming fluent in Spanish? You have to actually speak!!!! I mean I can’t “SAY” that I speak Spanish when sometimes I fumble with conjugating verbs properly. So, I’ve just had a come to Jesus Cristo moment and said practice, practice, practice as much as you can. Thank God I have an in house tutor and a hard one at that. My husband’s first language is Spanish and he wants to make sure I can both understand and speak for the sake of our expected son. Now the part that frustrates me as a learner is his determination to not allow me to sound like a “gringo”. He corrects me constantly and sometimes it annoys the hell out of me. Yet, I know it’s for my own good.
He tries to assure me of the use-it-or-lose-it principle that is so critical in learning a new language. I can’t be afraid to look or sound stupid. I’ll make mistakes, and that's okay. It’s hard convincing my inner perfectionist but I make mistakes. I’ve found while dining out or picking up groceries for him at the supermercado, people are usually excited that I’m trying, and don’t care that I have conjugated a verb wrong.
This quick little video shows that people are actually impressed that an American is willing to learn especially a black woman. We visited one of our favorite Mexican restaurants for dinner and I spoke in Spanish completely. One of my “AWW” moments was when the waitress asked my husband, Te ensenaste a hablar espanol / Did you show her how to speak Spanish?
There will be many more videos and posts that I am excited to share on this journey of learning a second language. If you are learning a second language and have tips to share.. let your amiga know.
